Germany has several work-residence routes for qualified professionals. The correct route depends on the qualification, whether recognition is required, the occupation, the job offer and sometimes salary or experience criteria.
Qualification comes first
Recognition is mandatory for regulated professions and may also be relevant to the chosen residence route. Academic and vocational qualifications can be assessed through the appropriate German recognition or comparability process.
Common work routes
- Work visa for qualified professionals where the legal requirements are met
- EU Blue Card for eligible degree holders with qualifying employment and salary
- Visa for professionally experienced workers in qualifying non-regulated occupations when its requirements are met
- Recognition-related residence routes where additional qualification measures are required
Language and employment
German is not a universal statutory requirement for every skilled-worker visa, but it can be essential for regulated professions and materially improves employability in many roles.
