Nursing Careers in Germany
Nursing is a regulated profession in Germany. Internationally trained nurses normally need professional recognition and a licence to practise, together with the language and personal requirements set by the competent authority.
Core pathway
- Assessment of the nursing qualification by the competent German recognition authority
- Full recognition, or a compensation measure such as an adaptation programme or knowledge test when substantial differences are found
- State permission/licence to practise before working as a fully recognised nurse
- Employment and residence/visa planning based on the recognition outcome and job offer
German language
For nursing recognition, German language skills are generally required at least at CEFR B2. Additional profession-specific communication requirements may apply depending on the competent authority.

- Evidence of professional qualification and registration
- Medical fitness
- Proof of good conduct or professional reliability
- Complete translations and authority-specific documents
